Hazaa!

Damn, I could swear hell would freeze over the day I decided to write a blog but according to accuweather it's actually 8 °C and raining. (http://www.accuweather.com/world-forecast.asp?partner=touchthesky&zipcode=EUR%7CNO%7CNO008%7CHELL%7C)

I'm Chris, a 27 year old guy from Norway living in the San Francisco bay area. I've recently come across a few blogs on weight loss and strength training that I find to be very inspirational; it's incredibly impressive to see how someone can go from 300lbs down to 150lbs when I've been overweight for a large part of my life and dealt with the struggles myself; that's why I am now writing a blog, to share my experience with weight loss as well as general tidbits about my life.

When I moved to the US from Norway in 2002 i weighed around 220lbs but for some odd reason never considered myself obese, I had a big "bear" type of build and to some extent pulled off carrying the weight thinking I was overweight but not fat or obese. After living in the bay area for 3-4 years I slowly gained weight until I hit a peak of 265lbs, at which point I was disgusted looking at myself in the mirror and realized I either had to pull myself together or learn to be happy with the body I had. The breaking point was a 10 year class reunion in Norway... I was very active as a kid and had an athletic build growing up so these people had never seen the "new" me. The reunion was announced about 5-6 months prior to the actual event and I was embarrassed at the thought of old friends seeing me again. I know a lot of people might think that it's not that difficult to make the decision to loose weight and actually follow through, but believe me when I say it's different when you're there, looking at yourself and feeling so depressed that you let it get to the point it did, hell it almost goes full circle right there, you feel so depressed about being overweight that you go back to the same old eating habits for the temporary comfort!

So the reunion was scheduled to happen in my home town in Norway, November 2006 and there were a lot of old class mates asking if I was going to travel back home to see them, so the pressure was on to loose weight. Now I'm not condoning my eating habits during that period of time but my primary diet consisted of chicken curry over rice w/ a small soda for lunch and a Taco Bell quesadilla w/ a medium soda for dinner. The key for me at this point was NO SNACKING!!! And to lay off the sodas if it's not accompanied by a meal. Also exercise was non-existent in my diet, I would sit home smoking big fat bowls and playing World of Warcraft all day, only venturing as far as the garage to get in my car and drive where ever I needed to go. Incredibly enough I managed to loose 45lbs and get down to a respectable 220lbs in the 6 months I was on this diet. I would regularly binge on weekends prior to May 2006, finishing a large meatlovers pizza and a 2 liter of coke in one sitting; I dread to think of how many calories that would amount to...

Anyway, the reunion was great, had a small fling with my very first girlfriend, which was a lot of fun, it's amazing how comfortable you can be around people you haven't seen for that long if you're just comfortable with yourself.
